Why your website content should come before its design
Starting with layouts and colours feels productive, but the strongest websites begin with a clear message. Here's how we approach it.
Most website projects begin with a conversation about how the site should look. It's a natural instinct, but it often leads to beautiful pages that don't say much.
Start with the questions visitors ask
Before any design work, we list the questions a new visitor needs answered within the first few seconds:
- What does this business do?
- Is it for someone like me?
- Why should I trust them?
- What should I do next?
Every section of the site should answer one of those questions. If it doesn't, it probably doesn't belong.
Write the headline first
A specific, benefit-led headline does more for a page than any animation. Once the headline and supporting points are clear, design has something meaningful to express.
Design to support the message
With content settled, layout decisions become easier: what deserves emphasis, which images support the story, and where calls to action belong. The result is a site that looks good and works.
